In addition to the additional expenses for FirstWatch staff, wages, travel, and food, during the event, the hotel expenses are extraordinary. When companies have conferences at a hotel or convention center, the venue requires catering and other services to be handled through them and charge extremely high rates for food, audio-visual, etc. (For example 5 gallons of coffee is ??, sandwich lunch is ??.) FirstWatch loses money on every Collaborate Live, but we feel that the investment is worth it in order to have face to face gatherings like this. Interestingly, this is one of the reasons most conferences have sponsors and exhibitor booths, because the income from the sponsors and exhibitors helps defray the conferences’ expenses. We are considering if there is a way to include sponsors and exhibitors in Collaborate Live in the future without detracting from the conference itself.
