Sessions we’ll be in and FirstWatch Suite hours:
Monday, August 12
Monday Afternoon Power Seminar:
Vision vs Action: Moving From Insight to Having Impact
1:00 pm – 4:45 pm
Jay Fitch, PhD | Mike Taigman, MA, FAEMS
Navigating uncertainty has become a leader’s toughest and most consistent task. The pace of change continues to accelerate. The single biggest challenge we face as leaders, team members, EMS/public safety organizations, and a profession at large is adapting fast enough to match the increasing uncertainty and complexity around us. And since all indications are that increasing volatility, complexity, and rapid change is the new normal, organizations will need to find new ways to mobilize caregivers to actively participate in gathering insights, creating solutions, and providing leadership to have impact.
Drawing on decades of experience, leadership veterans and future-oriented thought leaders Mike Taigman and Jay Fitch, PhD will dialogue with participants about leadership strategies, confronting crises, and influencing others to have real impact in their organizations and communities. This interactive session will delve into participant suggested topics of interest in a just-in-time format.
You will learn about several cornerstone issues including:
- How to enhance organizational agility
- Where to find timely and relevant information to increase impact
- Encouraging meaningful communications in an increasingly electronic world
- Building an inclusive culture
- Changes and challenges faced by today’s leaders
Speakers: Jay Fitch, PhD, Mike Taigman
Monday Evening Bonus Session:
Unrehearsed Roundtable: Where Ideas Take Shape
6:30 pm – 7:30 pm
Mike Taigman, MA, FAEMS | Todd Stout
Most conference sessions are as carefully planned, constructed, and executed as an orchestral performance or a Rolling Stones concert. This “just in time” educational circle is more like improvisational jazz or a Grateful Dead concert. It’s unplanned, spontaneous, and lots of fun. We never know what will happen. Join us as we discuss whatever matters most to you at the moment. It could be hospital wall times, why annual performance evaluations suck and should be abolished from the planet, how to make field supervision more effective and fun, or anything else you’d like to discuss/learn about. Facilitated by Todd Stout, Founder and President of FirstWatch and Mike Taigman, Improvement Guide for FirstWatch and Assistant Professor UCSF.

Volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous, or VUCA for short, is used by many organizations to describe the dynamic nature of the environment and in the case of leadership, the skills required for success.
Uncertainty and complexity in EMS are not going away — and confusion will remain part of the mix. The next 10 years will be exceptionally volatile, with many make-or-break system decisions to be made.
To be successful in a VUCA environment Volatility must be tamed by Vision. Uncertainty has to lead to Understanding. · Complexity yields to Clarity. Ambiguity must yield to Action. In this session, Ed Racht, MD will outline strategies for the changing clinical environment, lifelong mentors and coaches Mike Taigman and Jay Fitch, PhD. will describe strategies to prepare for and enhance leadership skills, Bill Sturgeon, MPA former fire chief and city manager will describe unique strategies in the public sector and Anthony Minge, EdD will describe financial strategies and moderate this session.
Facilitated by Anthony Minge, EdD with Jay Fitch, PhD, Ed Racht, MD, Mike Taigman, Bill Sturgeon
