Navigating uncertainty has become a leader’s toughest and most consistent task. The pace of change continues to accelerate. The single biggest challenge we face as leaders, team members, EMS/public safety organizations, and a profession at large is adapting fast enough to match the increasing uncertainty and complexity around us. Volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous, or VUCA for short, is used by many organizations to describe the dynamic nature of the environment and in the case of leadership, the skills required for success.

Uncertainty and complexity in EMS are not going away — and confusion will remain part of the mix. The next 10 years will be exceptionally volatile, with many make-or-break system decisions to be made.
